Why Preserve the Bp Reason 8
To Obey The Prophet’s saw order
The Prophet’s saw Order
To safeguard heritage, the Prophet saw commanded:
“Do not demolish old buildings; for they are the ornament of the city.” This included the bp.

until the Hijaz was overrun by
zealot Wahhabis 200 years ago, at which
time the Mosque was destroyed and its
endowments dispersed.
This act was committed in
ignorance of the explicit hadith,
“Do not raze
the vestiges of the past for they
are the adornment of Madinah”, as
narrated from Ibn Umar by al-
Tahawi in Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar.
"Vestiges of the past" refers to small remaining traces or remnants of something that existed previously, especially something that has disappeared or is disappearing. It often implies a sense of something having been lost or faded, with only small signs or hints remaining.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
- Remnants or traces:
- Vestiges are not the whole, but rather the remaining parts or signs that something existed before.
- From the past:
- They relate to things that are no longer present or are in the process of disappearing.
- Examples:
- These could be physical remnants like ruins of an old building, or more abstract examples like a fading tradition or a lingering memory.
The phrase "Do not raze the vestiges of the past for they are the adornment of Madinah" is a hadith, or saying, attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, which emphasizes the importance of preserving historical sites and cultural heritage, particularly in the city of Madinah. It highlights the idea that these remnants of the past, including buildings and historical locations, contribute to the beauty and significance of the city.
The hadith, narrated by Ibn Umar, was cited by Dr. Muhammad Said al-Buti in his preface to a book by Sayyid Yusuf al-Rifai, according to a Facebook post, to express concern over the destruction of historical sites in Makkah and Madinah. The hadith, according to the post, is interpreted as a condemnation of the destruction of historical remnants connected with the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions, which was seen as violating Islamic law and the traditions of the pious predecessors.
The preservation of historical sites is not just a matter of aesthetics; it is also about safeguarding cultural and religious heritage. These sites often hold deep historical and spiritual significance for Muslims, and their destruction can be seen as a loss of valuable connections to the past.
The Order was a Revelation
When the Prophet saw ordered that the buildings be preserved, it was not a casual remark or a non-binding request. He saw was announcing an explicit revelation that had been sent to Him saw by Allah.
During His prophethood, the Prophet saw received two types of revelation from Allah. The first type is called al wahy al matluw - the recited revelation - and refers to the Quran.
The second kind of revelation is known as al wahy ghayr al matluw - the unrecited revelation. This is the form of revelation that the Prophet saw articulated in His saw sayings (hadith) and His saw actions. It is referred to in Surat al-Najm:
"Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is no less than revelation sent down to him." (53:3-4) (Surat al-Najm: 3-4)
As the ayah above indicates, the Prophet saw did not speak of His saw own desires. He saw did not formulate His saw own laws and regulations. All commandments were decreed by Allah. The Prophet‟s saw role was simply to express to humans what was revealed to Him saw by Allah.
Surah??????????? further clarifies the role of un-recited revelation (al wahy ghayr al matluw): refers to
“Move not your tongue with it in order to hasten it. It is on Us to gather (in your heart) and to recite it. So, when We read it, follow its reading. Then it is on Us to explain it“.
Here, Allah refers to the Quran and announces that He will “explain it” (the meaning of the Quran) to the Prophet saw. It is evident, that, in announcing this, Allah is confirming that the explanation will be a separate revelation from the Quran - for had the explanation been included in the Quran, then, there would have been no need for Allah to emphasise that He will be explaining it. This explanation, in fact, is found in the hadith of the Prophet saw and was received through un-recited revelation (al wahy ghayr al matluw).
